Valentine's Day gift baskets are only given in the United States, as far as I know. I have certainly never seen one in Europe or Asia. They are a great idea, a bit like a stocking at Christmas!

Anybody would love to receive a bountiful St. Valentine's Day gift basket, that goes without saying, but they are a good idea for the person giving the gift basket too, especially if you don't know the person well.

If you buy only one present, then it has to be the right one, but if you buy a basket full of presents, then you can afford to get one or two wrong. This is more likely, if you do not look at the list of contents.

There are some fantastic, romantic St. Valentine's Day gift baskets on the market or you could buy an empty basket and fill it up with gifts of your own choice yourself.

So, what could you put in your St. Valentine's Day gift basket? Here are a few suggestions:

Flowers: the most popular flowers given on St. Valentine's Day are roses, lilies and orchids. Traditionally, the colour of the rose(s) is important, but many people know that any more. Here are a few examples, but they only apply to roses really:

red - love, beauty, 'I love you' (especially a single red rose).
white - happy bridal love
yellow - friendship
yellow with red tip - falling in love
coral - desire
thornless rose - love at first sight

Teddy Bear: it has become popular to give a St. Valentine's Day teddy bear, but it is not traditional yet!

Wine: wine, candles and music produces a lovely, romantic atmosphere. Give all three and share them.

Chocolates: many people consider chocolate to be a stimulant and an aphrodisiac. Give chocolate and find out for yourself, but don't give ordinary, shop-bought chocolate. Get hold of a small box of gourmet chocolates and give those - they are very sensuous indeed!

Jewellery: everybody loves to receive jewellery, don't they? A heart pendant or a bracelet with charms always go down well.

Lingerie: people feel sexier if they are wearing expensive nightwear or underwear. Fashions change and vary from country to country and even person to person, but you know what you (would) like to see your valentine in (or out of).

Music: music is the food of love, said the bard and we all know how much music contributes to an atmosphere. Choose any music you can dance slowly to.

Tickets: get tickets for the theatre, the ballet or a reservation for a good restaurant.
